Carving marble - Florence, Italy - 2012
When people ask me what I do, I like to tell them I play with fire, literally and a figuratively. A flame is such a beautiful thing. You can choose to destroy or create, an action that is fueled by the soul. The torch, saw, and hammer are my weapons of choice. I create jewelry inspired by the old, the weird, and the natural things in the world. My mission is to beautify the strange.
I began as a sculptor with a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. My sculptures were based around my fascination with containers and the relationship between man and nature. I started with life sized sculptures and gradually went smaller and smaller in scale. After graduating I found myself working at a restaurant and a print shop. I struggled with inspiration. Then in 2014 I moved to Austin Texas to be closer to the family. I began working at Zales selling fine jewelry, and taking small workshops at Creative Side Jewelry Academy, where I found my passion again.
My hobbies play a strong role in my studio practice. When I am not in my studio, I am either on a nature walk, drawing in my sketchbook, taking photos, watching documentaries, working on my computer, or hanging with my husband. Inspiration comes from dissecting elements from nature and everyday objects, and then reintroducing it to the viewer. If you are looking for the beauty behind the strange and unusual, you've come to the right shop.
